I love the memories these little things bring back, the feeling of being in Grandma’s house as a child, looking at yellowed, crisp photographs and looking at the heirlooms scattered through out the house. To some these items are junk, since they have lost their gloss or their newness. To others, they are pricey antiques. To my family, there are stories tied to each one. Often as I child, I would run my finger along one of the treasured items just to feel the love it represented. It was almost as if I could hear the laughter of my grandmother as a child when she turned the handle on her little wooden music box, or hear the snap of the peas as my great-grandmother’s wrinkled and soft hands placed them in the porcelain bowl, while sitting on the hide-away step stool.
Today, I still like to look and touch our family’s old things. They help me feel a connection to those gone, those that I loved, and those I have never met, yet are a part of who I am.
This is part of why I collect miniatures, and create them. They are a reminder of things past.
